Oyate: As we charge head first into November, and the associated Thanksgiving/Plymouth/Native American lessons, it’s important to portray Native people honestly and accurately. I have to say that some of the materials in our library are outdated in this respect, and are not terribly respectful of the many Native cultures. Thankfully, Oyate is a great remedy! It’s a fantastic site with book guidelines and recommendations, and first-hand accounts of the Native perspective. It also has a handy guide for evaluating children’s books.
